Central and Arctic Region's Permanent Gauging Network

The Tides, Currents and Water Levels Unit operates a permanent network of tide and water level gauging stations. There are thirty-three stations on the Great Lakes and connecting rivers and one additional tidal station on Hudson Bay at Churchill, Manitoba. The gauging network was established to provide the data required by CHS for hydrographic surveys, the production of nautical charts and publications and the safety of navigation.

This network of gauging stations are equipped with SUTRON 8210™ Data Loggers which record water level heights at 3 minute intervals using a Float - Counterweight driven encoder. These data are transmitted via telephone on a daily basis to a central collection station at our Burlington, Ontario office.
